Parasites Common in Pets

Pets face risk from:

  • Ticks - Ticks transmit diseases such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Ticks attach to pets when they are outside, then feed until they grow engorged and drop off.
  • Fleas - Fleas cause itching, scratching, and irritation of the skin. These common parasites also affect humans, so you'll be quite itchy if your pet gets fleas. Along with scratching and biting their skin, signs to look for include small black specs -- roughly the size of a poppy seed -- in pet bedding.
  • Intestinal worms - Intestinal worms, which live in the soil, are common in warm weather. Symptoms that your pet has worms include increased appetite, lethargy, bloating, and diarrhea. You may be able to see small worms in your pet's feces. Your vet will confirm a diagnosis with a stool sample, then treat your pet.
  • Heartworms - Mosquitos spread heartworm, which can be fatal if not treated.

How Our Veterinarian in Council Bluffs and Glenwood Treats Parasites

Our vet can treat your pet if they develop a health problem, but we recommend prevention as a matter of course. For fleas and ticks, a topical or oral solution protects your pet. Heartworm pills, when taken monthly, can prevent your pet from developing heartworm.

If your pet does have heartworm, they'll need a course of heartworm treatment. The same goes for worms. While there are dewormers sold over the counter, it's best to let our vet mix up the right dosage.
