Pet Vaccinations in Council Bluffs

Regular pet wellness checkups are an important part of our efforts to keep your pet happy and healthy. At Animal Clinic of Council Bluffs, our veterinarians advise pet owners to bring their pets in for their first round of vaccinations when they're around eight weeks old. A series of vaccinations through their first year will give your pet a good immunity base, while booster vaccines every year will keep your pet safe from common diseases.

What are Pet Vaccinations?

Beginning at a young age, your veterinarian in Council Bluffs will inject a chemical compound into your pet. These compounds, called pet vaccinations, encourage your pet's body to create antibodies against certain diseases, making them immune from sickness. During your pet's first year we'll give them a series of vaccines designed to build up their immunity. After the first year, immunity starts to wear off, so we administer another dose to bump up the strength and protect your pet for another year.

It's important to give your pet vaccinations even if they live indoors and rarely comes into contact with other dogs or cats. An emergency could cause you to board your pet in a kennel or they could escape into the neighborhood. There is no way to prevent your pet from ever coming into contact with another animal. If that animal is carrying a disease it can endanger your pet, unless they have already built up immunity towards it.

What Type of Diseases in Council Bluffs Do You Vaccinate Against?

Your veterinarian in Council Bluffs will administer a series of vaccines based on what's most common and dangerous in your community environment. Vaccines come in two varieties: core and non-core. Core vaccines are those that every pet gets, no matter what their lifestyle. Non-core vaccines, on the other hand, are only administered if a pet's environment calls for it.

At Animal Clinic of Council Bluffs, the core dog vaccinations we administer are rabies, distemper, parvovirus and canine hepatitus. Your dog will need a rabies booster every year, and the other vaccines will need to be updated every three years or less.

Depending on your pet's lifestyle, they will need other, non-core, vaccines. If your dog spends a lot of time at the dog park or you board it in a kennel, they will need to be vaccinated against bordetella, or kennel cough. If your pet spends a lot of time in woodsy areas, we'll vaccinate them against Lyme disease. In some areas, especially those with rodents and standing water, leptospirosis is a danger, and we'll need to vaccinate your pet against that.
